Today was a proud day in our club’s development, being the first time we were able to select 22 players in both grades, with no double ups. Figtree juniors and current Thunder Under 19’s players Ben Ryan and Keiran Churchill made their senior debut for the club.
The emphasis before the game was on trust, working for each other and maintaining pressure against the experienced Bulldogs outfit. As a team the effort could not be questioned with intensity at the ball, tackling and general pressure around the ground being excellent.
Bart lead by example burrowing into the contests and consistently putting in second and third efforts to set up his team mates.
Ash Becker put in a terrific game playing back, forward and pinch hitting in the ruck. Showing his true value to the team as a versatile tall. Andrew Giffen battled well in the ruck and used his strength to limit the solid Bulldogs ball carriers.
Josh Spicer worked really hard in the middle and pushed forward in the second half to kick three valuable goals using his body really well to mark and control the space around the ball. Colin Sharman inspired the team with his courage typified in an incredible effort to spoil the ball, punching it well up into the air and following up by running at full pace onto the high ball and marking as he hit a brick wall coming the other way.
Mark Bryant lead in the back line and organised the troops well under significant pressure from continuous opposition forward entries.
Figtree looked really competitive throughout the game and the contest was much closer than the scoreboard suggests with many spectators voicing their surprise at the final score. The playing group can take a lot out of this game.
